Open Learning for Youth

Young people have led the way in developing new models of peer-to-peer and interest-driven learning that leverages the power of open networks. Connected learning grows out of over a decade of research on how young people learn by accessing online resources and engaging in online affinity networks. The Leveling Up project investigates the learning dynamics of interest-driven online groups that support academically-relevant knowledge seeking and expertise development. “Twist Fate,” an art and writing challenge for 13 to 17 year olds, was hosted by DeviantArt, the world’s largest community for visual art, and by Wattpad, the world’s largest community of readers and writers. This challenge, was an opportunity for more educators and youth to tap into this creative energy and experience how social online platforms can fuel learning and engagement in the arts.
