Katie Salen

Katie is a designer working at the intersections of youth, online play, and learning. She is co-founder of Connected Camps and the founding Executive Director of Institute of Play. Her current research focuses on various aspects of social-emotional learning in online game communities, including conflict resolution, peer mediation, collaboration, and problem-solving. She led the design of the NYC public school Quest to Learn and once co-designed a karaoke ice cream truck driven by a squirrel. As a designer Katie has been involved in the design of slow games, online games, mobile games, and big games in both the commercial and independent games sectors. She was an early advocate of the once-hidden world of machinima and continues to be interested in connections between game design, learning, and transformative modes of play.
